We've landed, sort of...
The Emperor and I have landed in our new hometown, our stuff has arrived, and we're living adrift in a sea of boxes right at the second. What a rodeo! I still have most of the unpacking to do but we've got enough things put away to perform basic functions, like cook and sleep. Did I say that we'd be leaner in the personal possessions department? That was funny -- but the culling and donating is still going on and will continue until we have this pile under control. I was smart enough to sign up for wireless internet at home, though, so it will be a lot easier in the future to update this blog... provided I have the time.
While packing, I was reminded that I have some, erm, problems... I like stationery more than I like to write letters, and I can't stop myself from buying postcards. The cure for this is to buy postcard stamps and start sending them to friends. My other problem is that I can't bear to get rid of old watches, but the upside of that is that I take pretty good care of the ones I have. During the move, I came across four of my old watches which were "retired" because I couldn't find replacement batteries for them at the time that they stopped. I'm much more persistent now, though, and have put new batteries in all of them myself, and then took their picture. Let me give you a tour of my timepieces!
1. My Fossil watch: I bought it from an old-fashioned watch store in Flagstaff through a layaway plan -- it's my "best" watch. I think it looks a little bit Native American/1930s Southwestern so eventually I'd like to find a nice turquoise and silver band for it. For years I thought there was something wrong with this watch because batteries never lasted in it even though I had them replaced by Fossil. It was after I replaced the battery myself that I figured out that Fossil was using stale batteries and there was nothing wrong with the watch!
2. I love the square face and old-fashioned numbers on this watch.
3. The Emperor gave me this watch for Christmas a couple of years ago. It's my "tough" watch.
4. I chose this one as a "formal" watch when I had a job that took me to lots of formal occasions. It's both gold and silver, to match whatever else I needed to be wearing at the time.
5. My Disney "Lion King" grad-school watch, which I found on sale at Target about fourteen years ago. The second hand is really a transparent disk with tiny decals of insects on it, so when the watch is running the bugs look like they're circling the warthog and the meerkat. The face says "Slimy but satisfying." I love this watch, wore it to bits, and was truly bummed when the batteries ran out and no-one would replace them. I did it myself and still wear it all the time.
6. This was my "nice young lady" watch when I was a slim young thing trying to get an office job. I liked the band, and again was bummed when the batteries wore down and I couldn't find anyone who would replace them.
7. I'll call this one my "works hard for her money" watch. I bought it and wore it when I was working a blue-collar job right out of college, in the printing industry. I found it a few months ago, buried in the bottom of a box, and had a heckuva time getting it going again, but there it is!
8. I can't resist moon-phase watches. This one doesn't really reflect the phases of the moon correctly, but it does look cool and it works just fine. I think I took the band off because it had a plastic or rubber back, which makes me break out, and just lost track of the watch before I could put a replacement on it. I'm thinking that for this one, I might try my hand at making a band with a steampunkish theme to it.
I'm out of time for now.
