Small miracles

I've had this "Christmas" cactus for over ten years.  When I bought it, it was a spindly little thing with one or two strands of succulent segments on it.  It traveled with me to various offices, and the poor little plant didn't have real sunlight for at least its first seven years.  When I finally took it home in 2007, I put it in a nice spot with indirect light, and for about the last four years it's been putting on segments, one or two at a time, very slowly.  When it bloomed, about once every other year, the cactus might put on a bunch of buds but only one ever achieved full bloom.  While my little cactus isn't one of those glorious bundles of segments commonly seen in other people's homes, it's getting bigger and doing all right.  I refresh its top soil from time to time and give it food every now and then.

This year, my cactus had three blooms on it, all at the same time, around New Year's Day.  I had the presence of mind to photograph the one that I could get to, because once the buds appear you're not supposed to move it.  But there it is -- a burst of pink glory when it's biting cold outside.
