Outer Space

Oh lord, the past couple of weeks have been holy heck.  While the move into this home is complete, we are still living out of boxes and dodging stacks of stuff.  Nothing went as planned.

We did not return from Denver with IKEA bookshelves, which I still believe is key to our being able to put stuff away.  The SUV I rented was still not big enough (don't ask) and the shelves would have been too much weight for the recommended load.  (I did have dinner with my old friend, which was fantastic.  It was as if there had not been twenty-three years between visits.)  So we had a sort of expensive weekend in Denver at the precise moment that we should have been packing boxes.

The movers did come the following Tuesday, right on schedule, and you couldn't ask for harder workers or better guys.  We got all of the big stuff into the new place, some of it roughly where it was supposed to go.  My craft room is (once again) packed solidly with boxes and as such is unusable.  I then spent a couple of days working on packing and moving by myself before the Emperor got his ass in gear and lent a hand.  On Thursday, the carpet cleaner guys came and did the rental's carpets, while we continued to work on the rest of the house.  We finished everything and got it into the new place around 6 pm on Monday, just about the last moment we could leave for Flagstaff and still get there in time for my conference, and right after the vacuum cleaner's belt broke.

Exhausted, we grabbed some food out of the refrigerator to eat on the road, threw our suitcases into the car, and I started driving.  We made it to our destination in New Mexico around 1:30 am (their time) and fell into bed.  The next morning we showered, threw our suitcases into the car, and I resumed driving.  To make a long story short, it was after midnight Arizona time that I finally went up to my room ... and found it occupied.  It took another hour and three people to find an empty room for me before I could get some sleep.  That's pretty much how the rest of the weekend went.

Well, the upshot is that we're back in Smack in the Middle and living in a house that's still pretty much in chaos.  We still need bookshelves, and it's evident that we'll need a couple of other storage pieces as well.  The Emperor's doing a little to contribute (mostly moving his own stuff into the basement) but I'm spending some time on Pinterest looking for ideas and sources for organization and storage in kitchens and pantries.  I need to find a place for my pot lids, and for our "tupperware," and I need to make a couple of drawer organizers to corral cooking tools.

If I could get the bookshelves into place, then I could put the twenty-eight boxes of books into them and free up enough space to put our kitchen table together.  That would also mean I could get to the doors and shelves of the two storage cabinets in the den and put more kitchen stuff away.  Putting in the living room bookshelves would also free up the three existing bookshelves we already have, for other uses -- two for my craft room, and one for the den.  The two bookshelves now in my craft room would go down to the basement to serve as storage.  I'd also like to see if my dresser (which is now in the guest room)  will work in our bedroom.

We keep telling each other that we'll get there, a little at a time, but for now it's hard to be living in chaos.
