Originally I'd thought to make one post per day during my Thanksgiving break, recording the projects I managed to accomplish. Maybe I'd better just post once or twice, to keep my kvetching to a minimum.
Day One, Saturday as in yesterday, I cleaned both bathrooms to within an inch of their lives -- do bathrooms have lives? Anyway, I deep-cleaned both of them, and only need to vacuum them to be completely finished. I also went out and purchased a piece of furniture!
Last week I went out to the local furniture stores to "get ideas" as I told the salespeople, but really to look for any pieces that I could use to jump-start getting the house in order -- specifically, I was looking for a television stand. At the first place I visited, they had several stands, and one in particular appealed to me. I filed it away in my head, and a day or two later visited the other big furniture store in town. They had a bunch of stuff that I thought was intriguing albeit overpriced, but they did have one "accent cabinet" on sale that I thought would do for our next-to-the-front-door space. After looking around at the room for a day, I took a piece of curtain fabric with me to compare colors. Voy-lah! Now we have a red cabinet next to the door, and although the heating register cover still interferes with its being placed right against the wall, it looks just right in the space. The little gap between the wall and the piece actually works. When I get a better-proportioned lamp to go on it, I'll take a picture of it and put it below.
Also on the hob last week was replacing blinds. One of the blinds in the living room broke a string, so I went over to the local big-box home improvement store and found replacements. Oh my gosh, I love these blinds! They're not expensive, and once the hardware is installed (as mine was) they're easy to replace.
Later I'm going to go take a second look at that television stand at the first furniture store. If it's still on sale and for what I think I remember it to be, I'll get it. A stand such as that would go a long way toward getting this living room put together.
Speaking of putting together, the Emperor has yet to put that desk together; it has been more than a month since I brought it home. A couple of times I've thought about just assembling it myself, but I'm enjoying a certain fascination with the process as it is now. If we didn't need the desk, if I were not so frantic about getting the house organized, I'd probably just let him avoid doing it for another couple of months and see how long he could drag out a three-hour IKEA put-it-together-yourself job. About half an hour ago he took the directions with him to take a nap -- I might go out and look at that stand, then when I come back he'll be good and asleep and I'll steal the directions and just do it. Or not.
That's why I'm furniture shopping. When you buy a ready-made stand, it comes through your door already put together, and the nice delivery people put it right where you ask them to. I think I'll take a tape measure so I'll know how much space to clear for the stand. I'll probably have to buy at least two more smaller bookshelves, but those I will assemble myself, because enough is enough.
More later. How much more depends on what I do and what I find.
