This is the figurehead on HMS Surprise, docked at the Maritime Museum of San Diego . Built in 1970 for another purpose, this is the 28-gun frigate used in the film Master and Commander. The Maritime Museum has a number of great old ships, and you can board and closely examine most of them. They also have a tall ship that they send out on half-day excursions around the harbor. While waiting for the Emperor to fully tour the Russian attack submarine, I spotted this sailing away:
The photo was taken with the macro-zoom function on the camera. We sat out there for an hour, watching it scoot around at the vagaries of the light breeze.
A museum docent told me that it was HMS Lady Washington, a visiting ship moored at the museum for a special event. Lady Washington played the interceptor ship in one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The week before, it had been part of a mock cannon battle with several other ships. That would have been something to see!Our trip back to the West was one for the books. Our flight out of Denver was cancelled, and I have plenty to say regarding the Attitude of the Airlines and their Conduct in This Affair. When I get a letter drafted to somebody I'll put it here for your amuseument. There's only one flight in and one flight out of our fair city, so we had to hang around Denver for a whole day, visit with friends, and eat good Indian food to while away the time. I did get some knitting done on the Emperor's New Vest during the interminable hours we spent waiting for the flight that never took off, and I've continued to work on this piece all week in odd moments. However, it seems like I'll never make up for that missed day at work, and I feel rushed at home. Thank goodness for the weekend.

Thanks for satisfying my maritime craving--I hadn't even realized I was suffering from it until I saw the photos!
