Has it been that long already?

Today is February Fool's Day and the one-year anniversary of this blog -- Orchard Ranch's First Blogiversary. I can't believe I actually kept it up for this long! However, if Blogger becomes any more byzantine, this might be the last blogiversary for Orchard Ranch, at least with this host.

Same old, same old with the knitting knews. I picked up the Crayon Socks and started working on them in earnest, and have about five inches of one sock to show for it. The Emperor's Vest is going to become The Emperor's Sweater, since I would have a significant pile of the Ballybrae yarn left over if it remained a vest and I really want to use that stuff up. Looks like the Emperor will have a Zimmermann formula Seamless Hybrid, with k1p1 ribbing at hem, cuff and neck. I had nearly ten inches of the vest on the needles and converting the project to an EZ formula garment was simple -- and I could use what I already had done! The Tasha Shawl still gets a row or two every few days, but the Pi Shawl remains balls of yarn because I want to go up a few sizes of needle to a size I don't own... yet.

Last week I finally decided that it was okay to order that Ashford Joy spinning wheel I promised myself back in December (heck, I've been making this promise to myself for a long time... when I get a "real" job... when I have the such and so paid off... someday someday someday... but never made the jump). I checked Ebay first to see if any of the companies were offering sales along with free shipping and lo and behold, somebody was selling an unused Joy for a song. Without a second thought (unusual for me) I nabbed it and am now waiting patiently for the box to arrive in the mail. This is a wheel that folds up and can be put in a padded carry bag. I didn't get the bag, but I know I can sew one for myself pretty easily and have it look different from everybody else's.

My sister was one of the lucky bunch to get one of the first edition Kromski Sonata spinning wheels, and she loves it. There's something to be said for a wheel that folds up and packs into a bag. For the past, er, twenty-something years I've hauled my Ashford Traditional wheel along with me whenever I needed to take it to events, and it pretty much took up the whole back seat of my '86 Ford Escort. But I understand that you can check a Joy or a Sonata (in a bag) as luggage when you fly. Some spinners put them in their suitcase with their clothes.

The Joy was the first truly portable wheel created. Other companies are following suit nowadays, but I'm a pretty loyal Ashford spinner. Sis is a Kromski girl.

I wonder if the wheel will be here in time for my Saturday spinning date with the ladies?
