We have been to Arizona and have returned. We took the interstate most of the way, except for a little 75-mile cutoff through some pretty country in Colorado that kept us out of Denver traffic. (Let's not discuss how that cutoff dumped us in downtown Colorado Springs during five o'clock traffic and at the same time that both sides of the interstate were closed because of an accident.) As predicted, the journey was a lot more interesting and comfortable than our last trip to Arizona. We stuck to our schedule and were home on Monday evening.
This summer has been marked by an epic case of the I-doan-wannas. Our house is still full of boxes and we're still unorganized (although surprisingly functional). I'm not ready for school, I haven't started working on my last tenure file, and my office is still a mess. My Arizona talk went well, although I was really not as prepared for it as I usually like to be. Last Friday I drove for eight hours, had dinner with the Emperor's son and family, then stayed up most of the night in our hotel room trying to make some notes because I had procrastinated so badly. Saturday morning I got up early and worked a little more before going to the symposium and being the first to speak. This is not normal for me, but this summer has been One Of Those Summers.
Cotton dishcloths are still on the needles. I finished one and started another before making a fatal error and frogging it. I'll start it again tomorrow, maybe, and see if I can take one from start to finish in one day. When I'm finished with this welcome chore, I'll go back to the Hana Lace Scarf, or maybe pick up one of my other unfinished projects and power through it before even thinking of starting something new.
There's a chance, just a chance, mind you, that we will be heading to Large Regional City tomorrow to get our bookcases and have a little last indulgence before school starts. The Emperor had another headache today, so I'm not counting on anything. However, if we do pack a bag, right before we throw it in the car I'm going to call a bakery at our destination and order an authentic English cream tea for Saturday afternoon. Sunday will be my birthday, and this is what I want to do to mark it.
Excuse me while I kick my own kiester out of this chair and take myself to bed.
Saturday...
We did try to go to Large Regional city, but I didn't make that reservation for tea that I wanted, and that's good. This morning in our hotel, the Emperor woke to a nauseating migraine, so we packed up and returned home without getting anything done. I'm glad I didn't count on anything.
