eye candy Friday

They may not look like much, but they're the only flowers that managed to survive in our yard this year. I don't know if they're wild or cultivated Golden Poppies, but we had some last year in our Dismal Weed Bed. The Emperor was very careful to whack around them when he did yard cleaning since they are truly my favorite flower. This year, this solo bunch popped up through a crack in our sidewalk, and neither of us will do a thing to harm them. They're so bright and beautiful (and prolific) and in a few weeks I'll go out and harvest the seeds to encourage a crop in a better location next year.

These flowers remind me of some lines in a Jethro Tull song from about twenty years ago:

(from "Jack In The Green")

Jack, do you never sleep ---
does the green still run deep in your heart?
Or will these changing times,
motorways, powerlines,
keep us apart?
Well, I don't think so ---
I saw some grass growing through the pavements today.
